BREWBIKE PRIDE

A few months into my role on the operations team at Brewbike Northwestern, my supervisor and I discovered our shared “rainbow connection” and the fact that we are both queer. It was an exhilarating revelation that, while not altering the nature of our work conversations, brought an added layer of comfort.

Entering new spaces as a queer person often involves putting up a facade, a protective measure in response to a world that doesn’t always guarantee acceptance. The alarming frequency of violent attacks against trans individuals, especially transgender women of color, and the struggles some face in coming out due to unsupportive surroundings contribute to this need for caution. Discovering fellow LGBTQ+ individuals in shared spaces is not only enjoyable for the commonality it provides but also as a reassurance of safety.

As a gay, cisgender, white man at Northwestern University, I’ve been fortunate to feel generally secure in my sexual identity during college. However, learning that my supervisor and many co-workers are also LGBTQ+ transformed Brewbike into a safe haven where I could authentically be myself. It allowed me to express my identity proudly while working, turning my experience at Brewbike into an enjoyable journey where I could connect with colleagues genuinely, whether serving customers or managing inventory.

This Pride season, I express gratitude for the privilege of living openly and proudly. I’m thankful for those who have facilitated this journey and, especially, for the LGBTQ+ friends I’ve found at Brewbike.
